Last month I took a few days off to Berlin in Germany, and among many other beautiful places I have visited there, I took a little stroll through a small Artists market. There were many lovely items in small stands there. Oil paintings beside antique drawings, handmade dolls made of felt, vintage clothes and such. Of course my favorite stands were those of the handmade jewelry artists.
One of the items I loved most were a collection of rings made of metal with various stones in them. One of the rings, which I fell in love with immediately, was a large dark flower with a yellow amber set on it. I tried it on, and although I have small hands it surprisingly looked as if I wore a large flower on my hand.Of course I immediately wanted to buy it, but when the seller told me the price and I did not have that much cash on me, I thought to myself: ” Make one of your own!”.
And so I did.
I did not photograph it, but let the idea remain in my mind. Last week I decided to make one of my own. I took a large piece of flat Sterling Silver and spontaneousely hammered it to the shape of a large tropical flower. As it is the month of July, and July’s birthstone, I picked out a natural oval Ruby gemstone from my stone collection and set it in the middle. Here is the result:
When you view the image of an authentic ruby, its beauty will make you think of love and passionate emotions. The Ruby is considered to be one of the most valuable stones on earth. The color looks more Magnificent when it gets finer and rarer.
As many of us cannot afford the most precious rubies, I have found that red beach glass can move us with its warm color and beauty too. Of course, one cannot compare the majesty of the Ruby to the simple red sea glass. But sea glass when used for decoration, can beautify a woman, who would like to look special, too. Never underestimate the artistic collaboration of the sea, salt, wind and time when creating a beautiful piece of sea glass!
As July birthsone is a Ruby, I have handcrafted this month a few jewelry items with red beach glass
The first of my jewelry pieces with red sea glass is a handmade necklace handcrafted with sterling silver where I have assembled a few free form hammered silver loops to create created a basic pendant.
On the pendant I soldered a sterling flower which I have pre- designed for various uses and next to the flower, I set a bezel with a ruby red sea glass in it. I added two silver chains from each side of the pendant, added the clasp and then gold plated the whole necklace. The outcome is a rather pretty necklace just ready to be worn on July or any other month.
Another item I have created this July is a pair of free form sterling silver dangle earrings in which I set two pieces of ruby red sea glass:
As you may see, one can look rather unique without having to spend hundreds of dollars on Rubies. The sea, and my humble self, will provide them to you with love!
