SHAFRIRA MENAKER SCHREIBER
Art Sculptor
Shafrira is an art sculptor who owns a workshop not very far from my own in Ein Carmel.
Shafrira Menaker Schreiber is a carver of, mostly, marble from Italy,Portugal and India, the Sierras in California and Vermont. Shafrira has also worked in French and Texas Limestone. The colorful (like in the orange “soul’s kiss”) stones are Alabaster, generally from Utah, and New Mexico. Her sculptures ranging in size from palm-size to 5 feet tall.
About her work she says:
“Carving into this ancient matter reveals an ageless “alphabet of Essence”. Through sculpting I explore this abstract yet distinct language; its music, mystery, and messages of the Unified Field. Following the element’s natural patterns leads me to the form contained inside a rock, or wood.
The resulting sculptures reference the underlying order contained inside creational chaos, and probability waves. They reflect our individual and collective eternal, fluid essence, and light.”
Shafrira Menaker-Schreiber has been a professional sculptor since 1981, having her work shown in the U.S., and collected nationally and internationally.
Trained as a schoolteacher, she has worked with various constituencies ranging from New York public schools, to hospice, homeless shelters, youth and elder people with physical, mental and/or emotional challenges.
Sculpture, practiced since childhood, became her work of choice following, initially, studying with master sculptor Chaim Gross in New York (1971-1975). Also vital was subsequent mentoring with other gifted artists; especially while attending the Corcoran School of Art, Washington D.C. (1980-1984), the Carving Studio in Vermont, and, most recently, earning a Master of Fine Arts from John F. Kennedy University, Orida/Berkeley, CA., in June of 2000.

When I first came to Ein Carmel’s Artists “Colony” I saw a garden with huge beautiful Basalt stone art statues which somewhat reminded me of the photographs one sees in books about archaeology. It was overwhelming! Then I met a few more art sculptors whose work I highly appreciate. I decided to add a special page in my handmade jewelry workshop blog.
Here are some of them:

ART SCULPTOR
The first art sculptor whom I have met in our “Artists Colony” in Kibbutz Ein Carmel is Rami Gavish. A most talented artist who creates his sculptures in Granite and Bazalt stones.
I personally translated from Hebrew, what one of the most prominent art critics in Israel Mrs. Hanna Barak Angel has to say about his work:
”
Hanna Barak Angel - 2004
Rami Gavish`s celestial temples, chiselled in black gray granite, carry us to higher regions, to other dimensions.
As out of a silent prayer, as though out of perfect meditation, apertures open toward the light, toward unfamiliar regions, inviting us to behold and discover through them, additional possibilities. A stair way leading to, and ending in, a familiar yet different sphere, leading us through a deep meditative experience, out of and into a prayer. Gavish cuts into the granite with rigorous precision: clean perfect lines hew the tough material, enabling the ideas to reach an exact and true utterance. His technical ability is absolute and allows him to touch the highest levels of expression. His inner needs cause him to be repeatedly occupied with the same subject, urging him to reach a compleate summarization of his work of art. Each one of his sculptures in this sequence is a personal prayer, a shrine to god in the heavens. “

How It All Began:
1992 – “The Skull” was the first art statue. It was sculpted outside his house in the kibbutz after work hours . When it was almost completed , Dagan contacted the sculptor Mordechai Kafri of Moshav Nahalal, in Jezreel Valley. The result of this contact was that Mordechai Kafri became Dagan’s mentor.
1993 – Dagan and his brother set up a shed in a corner of the kibbutz, and created a number of sculptures there.
1994 – The sculpture garden was moved to Moshav Merhavia as part of a group of works that included 2 other sculptures.
End of 1999 – Just before the millennium the Basalton Sculpture Garden of Dagan Shklovsky was set up in Kibbutz Ein Carmel.
