Moshe Perelman - Sculptor

Moshe  Perelman is another wonderful friend who sculpts in Ein Carmel. While during the day  he runs a  govenment radio station, he comes to sculpt  in the evenings, when most people have already gone home. I watch him  set a chair in front of his workshop door with a large stone in front of him, and he begins to chizel on his sculpture.  Every once in a while he calls me to see his latest work.  Here is what he tells me about himself:

“When you get to Kibbutz Ein Carmel, on the left,  there’s the “Artists Workshop” area. On one side there were hen houses once and on the other – a heap of trash. When I first saw it I thought: “I have a lot of room here for my work”

Sea Pebbles

In the beginning I exhibited my work there. I arranged my statues side by side and gradually and slowly my workshop became a collection of statues facing each other.

Every time I “get the muse” I watch my work. The treasures there are priceless, I do not know why, I hold on to them. Nostalgia does me good. As time passes by they disappear from my memory and they stand watching each other’s back.

I hang a drawing or sketch on the wall, and then I forget there is a wall. When I have an idea I think first with a pencil, I put it down on paper in order not to forget,  hang it on a wall so I will not see there is a wall. While I forget there is a wall, I also forget the drawings on it. These drawings together with the sketchbook are the walls of my life and many of them have become three dimensional works.

How terrible it is that there is not enough time left for me to turn all my ideas into sculptures…

In the past, everything was tidy. As long as I was not inspired, I took care that my workshop remains clean and tidy,  At the start I had a small coffee corner, a table, an armchair,  a small place to work on frames and walls on which I hung my drawings.

On the other hand,  a clean and tidy workshop is a place to exhibit and not a place to work in. Therefore, anything else which I do in my workshop which is not for  the purpose of creating, seems to be a waste of time to me.

Today,  I arrive at my workshop and everything becomes disorderly. No difference between the floor to the wall or roof. Everything gets mixed up: The dust with the materials, the smells, the ideas, me, everything turns into one.

The center of the Studio changes according to the place where I work, sometimes there are a few centers. If I get tired of one project, I hop over to the other and the center moves with me. Only in this place I am the center. When I am here, I become the center and  only then I can find myself and know who I am.

In the Artists workshop in Ein Carmel, by a green lawn among olive trees and statues, very quiet and far away from the crowd, I sit on a chair with a pillow I “inherited”  from my mother.

This is where I am really me – in the place I call my workshop.”
